The Capitol Mall

Are you relocating to Salem Oregon for one of the state jobs?

One of the advantages of being the state capital is the mall.  In the spring when the cherry trees are in full bloom, photographers flock down to the Capitol Mall to take their photos before the blossoms go away.   While the Capitol itself is fairly minimalist in it’s architecture, they did a really nice job with the mall.

The Capitol Mall is a wonderfully designed area that is truly beautiful.  Cherry trees line paved walkways that lead to small alcoves of benches. Perfect for a picnic lunch, the Capitol Mall is a soothing experience.

In the summer, you will often see young children cooling off in the fountain.  There are also diamonds embedded in the walkways that share a little bit of the history of Oregon as well as some trivia.  You can learn the state bird and other various things about the State of Oregon. I always find it fascinating to spend time here.

The mall is also home to the war memorials, which are all unique in their own way.

This beautiful area is one of many offered by the city of Salem.

And don’t be scared off by the rumors…it really doesn’t rain here every day of the year.

Riverfront Park

Riverfront Park is one of the main larger parks in Salem Oregon. It houses the outdoor amphitheater for summer concerts, a covered area for concerts, movies and family gatherings, a large splash pad, play structures, walking paths, the Willamette Queen, and the Riverfront Carousel.

A nice flat sidewalk is perfect for kids who want to learn to ride their bikes or roller blade, joggers out for some exercise, and pet lovers walking their dogs. The trees are still young so shade is somewhat lacking at the park, but give them 10 years and there will be many shady spots.

The park is also home to an outdoor amphitheater, and there is a summer concert series at the park. Riverfront park is host to many events including the upcoming Bite of Salem.

There are two main features of the park that never cease to amaze me. Right next to the park is an old dilapidated Boise Cascade paper mill. 13 acres of prime land that was recently bought by developers with fantastic plans for the area. (Thank you investors/developers!)

When we first moved to Salem there was an old “Acid Ball” in the park. The acid ball held acid for the paper mill and it was this large ugly rusty thing in the middle of the park. Thankfully there are those people in the world significantly more artistic than me, and an artist was hired. The end result is truly amazing.

The other artistic feat of the Riverfront Park is the Carousel. All of the horses in the carousel were handcrafted by volunteers. Every time my kids ride the carousel, I can’t help but be in awe of the craftsman that helped with this project. The horses are truly stunning.

Riverfront Park is one of the many parks that the City of Salem has to offer residents. If you are coming for a visit or looking to move here, come and check it out. And yes…adults can ride the carousel as well so don’t be shy.

Located in the Willamette River, Minto Brown Island Park is a great local park for walking, bike riding, jogging, and feeding some geese.  The geese are well aware that people are the bearers of food.

Off Leash Dog Parks

Salem is dog friendly and dogs are allowed in all parks, provided they are on a leash. It goes without saying that your dog needs to be properly trained before you should take them to a park.  While Salem itself doesn’t have a leash law, for now, dogs are required to be on a leash while in a park.

Salem Oregon proper has two designated off leash dog area.  There is one at  Minto Brown Island park and  another one at Orchard Heights Park. There is some talk about having an area at Cascades Gateway Park and North gate Park.  There is an off leash dog area at Keizer Rapids Park, which is just north of Salem.

While not located in Salem, Silverfalls State Park has an excellent off leash area for dogs as well.
